DESCRIPTION:Unless you are a Native American Indian\, you are descended from immigrants. Many people have a strong desire to know why\, when\, and from where their ancestors emigrated. Scarcely any phase of family history research is as fascinating as tracking immigrant origins – and hardly any phase is as challenging. Learn effective strategies for locating these records and utilizing them to their full potential. \nA Zoom link will be added a week in advance for those unable to drive to the Library. \nSpeaker: Mark Mullinax\n \nMr. Mullinax holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Wayne State Universite and worked as a Genealogy Librarian at the Brighton District Library in Brighton\, Michigan. He enjoyed assisting others in their efforts to learn about their ancestors\, giving presentations on genealogy\, helping preserve the history of Brighton and Livingston County and making that history easily accessible to others. SUMMARY:Cemeteries\, Our "Outdoor History Museums"
DESCRIPTION:In this program\, we’ll share the stories of three cemeteries.  located in Commerce Township. All were founded between 1837 and 1848 during the Rural Cemetery Movement.  We will explore evidence of that movement in the development of these local cemeteries and share some of the history of grave art and its iconography. These three cemeteries hold the stones of soldiers who died while in service. So\, in the spirit of “who holds your flame\, who tells your story\,” we will be sharing their stories along with sharing some of our nation’s history. \nA Zoom Link will be added a week in advance for those unable to drive to the Library. \n  \n \nSpeaker: Ruth Du Fresne \nRuth Du Fresne has been researching her genealogy since 2009. She is currently an ag large member of the OCGS board. \nIn 2020 during the covid era she turned her genealogy researching skills to uncovering her community’s local history. In 2023 she presented her first cemetery walk. This summer she completed her twentieth .  During this journey she was introduced to the idea that cemeteries are a community’s “outdoor history museum.” She has embraced this idea wholeheartedly. \nIn 2025 she attended a symposium about cemeteries and it intensified her passion to learn more and share here learning. \nDownload a complete program schedule here.

DESCRIPTION:Finding your German-speaking Ancestors. We will explore ways to identify the village your ancestor came from and locate civil and church records. We will tackle the language and handwriting to help you find your folks. She has Pommeranian and Saxony German roots\, as well as Luxembourg\, Norwegian\, and Cornish (Cornwall\, England) ancestors\, She has also helped her husband with his Bavarian\, Posen\, and Hungarian ancestors. ; She is active in the Waterford Genealogical Society\, where she is the second Tuesday evening of the month convenor (first 30 minutes for any Germanic questions); she also belongs to the Cornish Connection of Lower Michigan\, and Southwest Wisconsin Cornish Society She grew up around Milwaukee Wisconsin. SUMMARY:Identifying Types of Historic Photographs and the People in Them
DESCRIPTION:Zoom webinar – registration required\, a link will be posted in advance. \nThis is our annual joint meeting with the Oakland County Genealogical Society. This joint meeting will only be available as a webinar. The presenter will join us virtually from the Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne\, IN. \nIdentifying Types of Historic Photographs and the People in Them\nHave a box of old family photos but aren’t sure when they were taken—or who’s in them? In this program\, you’ll learn how to identify common 19th and early 20th century photograph types\, from daguerreotypes to cabinet cards\, and resources to help you along the way. We’ll also explore practical strategies for identifying the people in your images\, using details like clothing\, studio imprints\, and family context. \nChristina Clary Bio\nChristina Clary\, C.A.\, is a native of Owensboro\, Kentucky. She earned her BA in Psychology from Brandeis University in 2012 and her MSLS in Library & Information Science from the University of Kentucky in 2018. In July 2022\, she became a Certified Archivist through the Academy of\nCertified Archivists. Christina’s interest in genealogy and history originated during her childhood\, where she avidly listened to stories about family history and lore passed down for generations. In 2015\, she began her genealogy career in the Kentucky Room at the Daviess County Public Library. SUMMARY:Oaths of Allegiance During the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:During the American Revolution\, the Second Continental Congress required oaths of allegiance from all personnel serving in the Continental Army and Navy. The requirement of swearing or affirming loyalty to the newly formed United States was then extended to all free men. For genealogists\, locating an ancestor’s oath can help provide proof of patriotic service. It also places a man in a particular geographic location\, frequently lists his occupation\, and provides a signature or mark. This presentation discusses the background of oaths of allegiance in America and provides hints on locating surviving oaths and lists. \n  \nSpeaker: Kathy Petlewski\, M.A.\, M.S.LS.S \nMy educational background is firmly centered around American history with both undergraduate and graduate degrees in that area.  In addition\, I received my Library Science degree and became a reference librarian specializing in local history and genealogy. \nWith the advent of computers in libraries\, I assumed the roll of Electronic Resources Librarian and became proficient in website design and maintenance.  Combining historical research with online resources is my passion and drives me to find elusive materials for my projects.  In June\, 2018 I stepped down from my full-time position at the library and am now devoting my time in private research projects and presenting genealogy workshops and talks throughout southeastern Michigan. \nMy genealogy work began over fifty years ago in Augusta\, Georgia at the feet of my Irish grandmother who passed down the oral history of her family as well as providing me with family documents and photos.  For half a century I’ve been traveling around the country to courthouses\, libraries and cemeteries.  While so many of these places have now digitized their collections and placed them at our disposal 24/7\, I still have fond memories of the joys of discovering family papers hidden in the files at old courthouses. \nDownload the complete program schedule here.

Please download and print a copy for yourself before the meeting. \nMore than 60 years before Lewis and Clark began their famous expedition\, Jean-Baptiste Amiot was already moving through the upper Great Lakes fur trade and into the Dakotas with the La Vérendrye expeditions. Why? To expand the fur trade westward\, establish alliances with Indigenous nations\, claim land for France\, and find a water route to the Western Sea (Pacific Ocean). \nHow did a blacksmith at Fort Michilimackinac become part of such a far-reaching story? And why did he die in Green Bay? \nVeteran genealogist Judy Nimer Muhn will unravel that mystery for the Oakland County Genealogical Society on September 1. Her presentation\, “He Died in Green Bay? Why There?” uses Amiot’s life to demonstrate how extensive research can connect scattered clues across borders\, jurisdictions\, and collections\, revealing fascinating stories that span continents. \nAttendees will discover little-known sources in Michigan\, Wisconsin\, the Dakotas\, and France\, and see how unstoppable curiosity helped turn a surprising trail involving a lead tablet from 1743 into a defensible conclusion. \nMuhn is president of both the Michigan Genealogical Council and Oakland County Genealogical Society.
